Thanks again for both of these.

The last is interesting in two respects. 1. that Edwin is married but, just as in 1901, his wife's not there and 2. he's living on his own means whereas 10 years later he's a cutlery manager.
Ever wondered whose idea it was to put "Warning: a certificate is not evidence of identity" on a DEATH certificate?!

have the death certificate for Edwin. d. 5 Dec 1909 at Ecclesall B. Workhouse Infirmary. Formerly a cutlery manager (as in 1901 census). Informant was George E Fell, son, of 14 Ellison Street, Sheffield.

looks like edwin and sarah ann split and when there own ways ?

Many thanks for all this Peter.

I have ordered a copy of the death certificate for George and the birth certificate for George Edwin. I'll see what they give me.

All this older info and I'm still no nearer finding out about Arnold's later life - it seems odd.

PS I love that then name became Hell!
PPS I wonder if in 1891 Cookes was Crookes (part of Sheffield) and in 1861 if George's job was table knife hafter (I'm sure I have that somewhere).

Yes, Peter, I have always had in mind that he may have emigrated. Thanks for checking later censuses.

Well, I got details of the voyage from London to Gibraltar.

Passenger name: Fell, Arnold
Last address in UK: Crofton, Blundellsands (Liverpool)
Class: 1
Port at which contracted to land: Gibraltar
Profession: chemical engineer
Age: 35

I don't know if this is grand-pappy but the profession and that he lived in Liverpool suggest it was the same guy who died in Liverpool in 1941.

Hmmm. Good question! Not really. I'm nowhere closer to finding when AEF died or what happened to him after 1927. I don't think he can be the same guy who was a chemical engineer.

I'm sorry to say it still is a brickwall. I'm not sure what it's going to take to get through it...
