The Brutal Manslaughter at Lye Waste 1864

Yesterday at noon, Mr John Humphreys the Coroner for Middx resumed at the London Hospital the enquiry respecting the death of Daniel Hill, aged twenty seven years, who expired from the effects of extreme brutality.

It appeared from the evidence taken on the previous occasion that the deceased was a Boiler Maker residing at Blackwall London. The mother of the deceased resided in Staffordshire, where she had died about a month ago, deceased and his brother Henry Hill left London for the purpose of attending her funeral. Three days after the funeral, they and another brother named Thomas were at an Inn called "˜Pearsons Beer House"™ at Lye Waste Bank Worcs. The three of them were attacked by seven men who were in the house at the time, in consequence of Thomas Hill refusing to allow them (the seven men) to drink his beer. Thomas Hill said to them, "If you gentlemen pay for your drink." All seven instantly set upon deceased and his two brothers . Thomas Hill was thrown violently over a high embankment. The skull of the deceased was fractured by a blow from a brick on the back of the head, Bricks were thrown about in all directions. A Man named Uriah Baker struck the deceased several times. The deceased was lying on the ground and a woman who was standing near asked Baker not to ill-treat him so much. Baker replied, "You ------, get out of the way or I will serve you in the same way that I served another like you before." (Baker had very nearly murdered a woman a short time before.) The scene was a dreadful one, and in consequence of the loud cries of "Murder" the people rushed out of their houses. When the Police arrived, the deceased was conveyed for safety to a neighbouring house, and a Doctor immediately sent for. There was a severe wound on the back of his head which was covered with blood. Shortly afterwards the deceased returned to London.

He was admitted to the London Hospital suffering from a compound fracture of the skull. He died on Friday last, from an abscess on the brain caused by the severe injuries he had received.

On last Sunday morning Baker was arrested by the Police on the charge of causing the death of the deceased, and he is at present in custody at Stafford Gaol.

Mrs A Partridge said that when the deceased was lying on the ground. Baker struck him on the back of the head with a brick which he held in his hand. The Coroner having summed up, The Jury returned a Verdict of "Manslaughter" against Uriah Baker, for feloniously killing and slaying Daniel Hill. The Coroner then Issued his Warrant for the Committal of the Accused.
