 Hi Ron

You appear to be working from the wrong start point

You should be starting with a 'proved' person -yourself even -and 'prove' back from then.

To start with what you believe/assume/hope and try to come forward to a proven point creates a tangled list of confusion and possibilities!

:-) Hi Alec

Thanks for your post.

Firstly, I would just like to clarify what it is that I have done so far.

I have traced backwards from two 'proved' persons.

The first person is the one that I met many years ago, which has led me to the Goodalls from Hampshire and the second is any one of the neighbours of my Grandfather, namely the Goodalls from Birmingham.

I am admittedly believing/assuming/hoping, that if I go back far enough, the two trails will converge.

I therefore can't agree that I am starting with a belief/assumption/hope and trying to work forward from it. :?

I believe that my method is correct, although my ability to carry out the search leaves a lot to be desired, hence my request for help.

I hope that this makes sense. :-)

Regards

Ron

 Hi Ron

Understood -I thought you were looking to prove without a basis of either but as I now understand it, you have one proved and are looking to see if the second traces to the same origins.

I take it "CHARLES R PHILLIPS 31 ( Not my Grandfather) Longmore Street, Kings Norton in 1871" is related to your Grandfather

Cheers

Hi Alec

I'm sorry, it looks like that was wishfull thinking on my part.

THOMAS PHILLIPS b. abt 1843 Warwickshire, Birmingham was my Granfather's father and in the 1891 census at the same address in Cheapside, Birmingham.

He was a Bedstead Maker.

CHARLES R PHILLIPS (Not my Grandfather) b. abt 1841 Birmingham, lived 2 numbers away from Mary Ann Goodall in 1871 census, who's son John aged 17 was a Bedstead Castor, which sounds to me like a part of Bedstead making.

I have lept to the conclusion, without any firm evidence, that he may have been working for THOMAS PHILLIPS, who he may have known through CHARLES R PHILLIPS, who may have been THOMAS'S brother, as they are a similar age.

Sorry, absolutely no excuse for doing that, except perhaps that I have so much stuff that I cannot get myself straight and am making silly mistakes in my haste.

I am retracing my steps now and trying to get more organised, and will be more carefull in future.

Hope this clarifies.

Cheers

Ron

Incidentally, CHARLES R PHILLIPS & MARY ANN GOODALL, 1871 census, lived in Kings Norton, Worcestershire.

 We all do it Ron and it does sort out eventually even though it seems like going round in circles
I wouldn't be surprised if Charles R Phillips (Not my Grandfather)is related somewhere

All the best
Alec

Hi Ron just thought I'd mention that we had a family of Goodalls as neighbours in Grosvenor St West, Ladywood, Birmingham in the 50's.
The father was William (Bill) , and I think his wife was Eva, they had a son, Ernest.

Mallosa & Alex, thanks for that help :-), sorry for delay in replying.
Incidentally, I was right (and so were you Alex) about Charles Robert being Thomas's brother :P
Still a long way to go though :!:
Cheers
