Hi. I realise that but you have to bear in mind that the census form was often filled in either by someone who did not spell very well, or someone who could spell but only based on what they were told.
So it is very common for a name like Burk to appear as Burke on some records. Then too the original census entry (filled in by the head of the household or another person) was transcribed by the enumerator and is that transcription which is seen on sites like Ancestry. The index provided by Ancestry, or whichever company you use, is transcription of the enumerator's transcription so if the enumerator used a pen which blotched the ink, or wrote in a very poor hand, it can lead to errors in the transcription. The end result is that if Alice Burk, born London in 1864 doesn't pop out then you have to look for possible mis-spellings. Sometime the name is right but the age is wrong, it is a matter of finding a possibility and then seeing if it looks likley or if it can be ruled out.

You don't really have much to go on:

Alice Burk, born abt 1864, lived Tottenham Court Road. Married Thomas Lyons and left London before 1879, settled in Ireland.

Could she perhaps be listed in emigration records?

I thought you said she moved to Ireland? Ireland was in the UK until the 1920's. As gardener says, you have to be more flexible with names, they could be spelt any which way on the Census and the Parish Records, oftan our ancestors could not read or write, therefore any form filling was left to the Official who was filling in the forms, who ever that may have been.

Would the fact that she got married at 16 have anything to do with the difficulty in finding her?

I think the difficulty is that there is no obvious marriage to Thomas Lyon, all you have to go on is one birth certificate which gives the maiden name of Burk/Burke. Even if she was found on the Census you need to be able to prove it is the correct one. Linell.

I just found out that his father's name was Daniel. Would that help in finding a marriage certificate?

I was also told that she was brought over to Ireland under false pretences.....whether that means she was kidnapped or what I don't know

I found her on the 1911 Irish Census and according to that, she would in fact have actually gotten married in 1887....

I can't find an obvious marriage for a Thomas Lyon and Alice Burke, perhaps he promised to marry her and didn't This is a bit like a needle in a haystack, do you have Thomas Lyon on any Census Linell.

He is on the 1901 irish census.
