no mike not fact just you point of view not shared by many, as one of my workmate is an aussie and the cracks excellent an his sense of humour is as bad as mine so all i can say is your point of view is not everyones. end off so put this back on topic did everyone have a good day.

I have spent about 5 months in Australia in the past, and I found no problem with the Australian people I met, but then I am very easy going.

Australia day was slightly marred by the those who hijack it to push the Repulic issue.

I am a staunch republican and the sooner we get rid of the ties to the monarchy the better.

However, I do not agree with:

a) Changing the Australia Flag to remove the Union Jack. England is a major part of where we come from and this should be symbolised on the flag.
b) Changing the National Anthem (again..). I think "Advance Australia Fair" spells out who we are quite nicely.
c) Using Australia Day to push the replican agenda.

I've got a bell on my house that plays Advance Australia Fair as well as God Save The Queen,Rule Brittania,Jerusalem,You'll never walk alone,Abide with me,Stars and Stripes,Willheminus,Deutschland uber alles,Harry Lime Theme and knees up Mother Brown.

but the queen is only a figure head now and has no real power in australia so what the point in changing unless the majority vote for it which at the moment i think the majority wants the queen to stay as figure head ?


all you would do is elect a president and his office would cost you millions of more pounds to keep with little advantage, that the reason i carnt see the point of getting rid of her in the uk we would still have to upkeep the palaces/castles as they belong to the country with proberly a drop in tourist revenue to boot ?

That would be great, Jimmy!

Not just a figure head. The sacking of the democratically elected Whitlam Government was done by a person who was not voted into his position. John Kerr had to ask persmission from Her Royal Majesty to act on her behalf in doing so.

Such power might be legal via the Australian Consitution but surely the act should be done without asking the permission of an overseas figure head who doesn't even have that amount of power in their own country and by somebody we have chosen to have that power.

Replace the Governor General with a duly elected official who has the same powers without the intervention of a foreign power.

That is why we should be a Republic.
