Signature at St Lukes Cradley Heath

that is a very definate type of signature need to see if the Kingswinford one matches

I know but we have 20 years between them and sigs change in that time.

what does it for me is the bending on the B they are the same it arches the same

so I am going to add in that second marriage looks good to me

Not so sure about those two signatures: the letter B at the start of Baker is formed in two completely different ways, as is the r at the end. I know signatures can change over time, but if you have been taught copperplate writing I don't think the basic way you form the letters would change.
Also the l and h in Elijah have distinct backward slopes/ curves to them in one signature and not in the other.

Hi,

I have a photocopy of the register entry for the marriage of Elijah Baker to Ann Forrest - will e-mail as I can't work out how to attach it.

Here's a transcript of the death certificate:
Elijah Baker died on 06-06-1881 at Waste Bank, Wollescote, aged 77 years. A Sheet Iron Roller, he died of Accidental Death by falling down stairs. The death was registered by a certificate from Ralph Docker, Coroner for Worcestershire, on 14-06-1881. The Inquest was held on 11th June 1881.

I realised the "burial in May but death in June" error this morning Am trying to find my original notes to see if it was a typing error or I copied it down wrong. Death is definitely 6th June.

The 1861 and 1871 census returns posted by Rocky look very promising. I've also found the following:

So we have Elijah Baker -we have a bapt and dob 1801.
-Marries in 1824 wife dies
-Elijah looks like he remarries again in 1849 to an Elizabeth Williams nee Morris.
(marriage age bit out -father is on there which could be made up-occupation millman does that fit with sheet roller?)

-Then we have a dau Joanna bapt which does fit with occup for Elijah Baker
06-07-1851 Joanna daughter of Elijah & Elizabeth Baker, Tipton, Sheet Iron Roller, b. 20-09-1850

-We have a newspaper article newspaper report from 1854 which backs up 2nd marriage
"Elijah was in trouble again for assaulting his second wife, Elizabeth, and deserting her and his family. It mentions that his first wife died from his ill treatment ..."

We have his kids marriages where his occup is down.....and matches death info on most.

so looks like Mary Ann Webbs Baker b 1856 and Wm Baker maybe his too!
and On Mary Anns marriage he is deceased maybe they had had enuff of him by then! but still he is down as an iron roller

but we cant find him betw censsus 1851 till death
I wonder if he changed his name?

and whose stairs did he fall down?
who found him if we can get a neighbours name from inquest we could find an address

Elijah's death certificate in 1881 just gives his address as Waste Bank, Wollescote. The informant column says that the death was registered by a certificate from Ralph Docker, Coroner. As far as I am aware, the inquest records no longer exist. The only other information I have is a brief report in the County Express for Saturday June 18th 1881, which says:

"THE RESULT OF DRINK "“ On Whit-Monday, Elijah Baker (77), sheet iron roller, Waste Bank, Lye, came home, after having been drinking, and going to bed he fell backwards upon the stairs and was killed instantaneously. "“ An inquest held last Saturday resulted in a verdict of Accidental Death".

This would seem to imply that Elijah died at his home but no clue as to exactly where that home was or who found his body .

There are only 2 Elijah Bakers on the 1851 Worcs Census Jan, the one you have born abt. 1811 Sheet Iron Roller and this one:-

I have a Newspaper Report on Ori (also called Uriah) Baker for 1864 where by afer a Pub fight between the Baker and Hill Families Ori hit Daniel Hill over the head with a brick and fractured his skull, Daniel later died and Ori was charged with Manslaughter, the article also said he had earlier nearly murdered a woman.
