Sorry Linnel hadnt seen your reply.
I would have thought first if who he married was known would have been the 1st port of call to get a cert or look up for and hope fathers name is on there.

Yes Jo, a Marriage Cert would be a good idea to start with. All very strange, mind you as we know, it was quite common to just change your name for whatever reason.
Perhaps Cariadara can add some more detail.

Hi all, thanks for your posts...
NL/Grangers - Your right, he did marry Sarah Ward in 1900, i ordered the cert and unfortunately no father was listed.
Linell - No, i wouldn't know if the birth certs were correct, the only family knowledge is that he lived with the Spittles, i think i'll try sending for a cert for Samuel as you advise to see if i can match anything up.
Jimmy - Thanks for the look up for the birth of John Henry spittle, will send for this also

With no fathered named you would imagine he was born out of wedlock. Its just going to be pot luck with the birth certificate.
Interestingly theres this in 1871.

I think Sarah's mothers maiden name was Perry so James is probably a relative of Sarah's, so no clues here i dont think
Jo, i had also noticed this record and wondered if Eliza could be his mother and Maria her sister, the mother of Samuel? But why would they be living with the Spittle family? im baffled by it all
The informant on the birth cert i have is the mother 'Eliza Wall' address is 6 Court Queen Street, Birmingham but this states her maiden name was Jones?
I hope the certificates i send for will help
