You'll end up like Richard III if you only use one pole (assuming that he was, which he may not have been). Anyhow, you need two or none.
I hate those sticks. I used to go hiking here with a walking group and those sticks ruin it! There you are tramping along in the peaceful outdoors, and all you hear is clatter clatter clatter as sticks hit the rocks.
