ARC TBC - Bellengers ( + alternative spellings !)
Hi all
I am searching for the Family of THOMAS Bellenger born in 1809 & baptised at St Philips, B'ham in Oct 1810 along with a SARAH ANN. His parents are JOHN and Mary.
I have found a John and Mary on Family Search but located in Hampshire, along with a number of possible children also in Hampshire - who are still there in 1841 census. I don't think this is the same family.
I haven't been able to find any of the B'ham Bellengers again until THOMAS marries in 1843 in Romsley, Worcs. I don't know who they are are or where they have come from - any ideas what I can do next ?
(I know that originally they were Huguenot refugees)
Cheers Anne

Hi Anne, not much to go on, who did Thomas Marry, do you have the Marriage Certificate
His parents could have died by 1841. I found this Thomas in Aston B'ham 1841, probably not him but he was born about the right time:-
Thomas Billing 30 Whitesmith
Sarah Billing 25
John Jones 20
Mary Jones 20

Do you have his marriage certificate to Rebecca?
He was a lot older than her.
It may have been his second marriage.
Coud this be him in 1841 with a Hannah as his wife?

His sister was born later than him.
The fact that they were baptised ont he same date suggests they had recently moved into the Parish.
His parents were living in Edgbaston when his younger brother was born.

Re: Bellengers ( + alternative spellings !)in Birmingham 180
Thanks for all these replies - I have Thomas and Rebecca's marriage cert.for Romsley - both Thomas and his father are labourers which is common but not a lot of help. My next question will be why Romsley as they are back in B'ham in 1851. May be Rebecca was in service there by then for it to be her local parish - did couples always marry in the brides local parish ?
I know quite a lot about Rebecca Mugg and her family - they were from Bromsgrove and in 1841 she was a nailor in Catshill.
I had found a number of sibling baptisms and also wondered if they were new to the area, as Thomas and Mary Ann were bap. on the same day.
I hadn't found William - although he does appear living with them in a later census and so I suspected he existed as a sibling.
I'll look into the Gough St connection - have already Googled the street and found a super 1837 map of the area, which also shows Baskerville Place where Thomas & family were living in 1851 I hadn't been able to locate it before. & will look for those daughters. !
You have all found more in an afternoon than I have in several years - do you run masterclasses in how to do this ?
Thanks again Anne

Re: Bellengers ( + alternative spellings !)in Birmingham 180
There are many reasons why they might not get married or baptised in their local parish.
Many families adopt a parish as thier "family parish" and as long as they are within easy travel distance, prefer to use it.
There are no traditions when it comes to picking the parish to be wed. If by Banns then the Banns will always appear in the parish in which they reside and the parish in which they marry.
It is a good clue when they marry or baptise outside of thier parish of residence.
It strongly suggests you will find other family members in the Parish registers.
Similarly, if you find them marrying in London when they live nowhere near there you can be assured there was some opposition to the marriage.
A bit like Las Vegas in the U.S.A, quick and easy weddings could be organised in London.
