My problem is with an ancestor called John Willis BORROWDALE. He was born about 1806 and lived most of his life in Essex but census returns say that he was born in Scotland. I haven't been able to find out exactly where in Scotland so I haven't been able to find his parents. However, in the 'where born' column of the 1851 census, place of birth is given as 'Scotland B ST' - just like that, with a space between the B & and ST. Now, I'm quite sure that, to many, it will be perfectly obvious what B ST stands for, but NOT to me. Any help please?
