"completed" Rood End and Dog Kennel

Post by expat66 »

Apologies for my lack of 'local knowledge'... but can anyone tell me whether 'Rood End' and 'Dog Kennel' in Warley would be close to each other?
I have two sets of people living in these places in 1891...( as per Edward Evans B.1849 Oldbury thread)...I think they are related and if they are living close this would help to confirm.
Expat :-)

Rood End and Dog Kennel Lane are very close to each other and are both on Google Earth. Rood End is a place, and is on the border of Langley, Oldbury and Smethwick. I have some information in a book somewhere, just need to find it. A Rood is a Holy Cross and this Rood was at the end of a stream which ran through Langley and was considered to be holy water. Rood End was very famous and was visited by monks from all over the world in the 12th century who came to drink the holy water. In later years, the water, which was pure and came from a spring, was harnessed and used by the local brewery industry, until it was all used and is no longer there. The book is called Langley and Round About and is still available from the Oldbury History Society here : http://www.historyofoldbury.co.uk - it's packed with information and is well worth getting a copy if your ancestors are from this area. Not sure how Dog Kennel Lane got it's name, but I'll find out and let you know.

I heard that Dog Kennel Lane gets its name from a dog pound. That's what an old feller told me once in The Merrivale Pub.In fact the site of THe Merrivale is the place where the pound was.
That cross in Rood End,as Antie Em told us about, was where Showell built his brewery. The healing waters proved to be ideally suited to the brewing of beer.
Isn't that the place what's just been burned down? It's on the corner of, i've forgot the name of the roads!!
Opposite The New Inns on the bridge,on the road from The Merrivale to Langley, just past the railway crossing by Langley Green Station.
It was a massive building anyway.Very impressive.

That's Langley Maltings Rob - , just opposite Langley Station. It's almost gone now - been demolished. Such a shame - very impressive building - there are some picture of it here : http://www.derelictplaces.co.uk/main/sh ... hp?t=12704

There was talk of it being turned into flats not long before the fire.

Thats right Antie Em!!
The brewery was next to the Regent cinema.Crosswells Road Crosswells Brewery!!
Is it still there?
I used to go the Regent every friday night along with most of the lads and girls of my age 1962-63. Everyone would get up in the pause and have a wander round seeing who was in and who they could chat up.
In fact i was in the Regent November '63 when there was a newsflash that John F Kennedy had been assasinated!!
Sorry ExPat we're going off topic here!!

It's still there Rob - I remember waiting for 10 mins in the car while a train went over the level crossing and looking at the building which had a sign saying Alcohols and wondering what exactly they did. Here is the link : http://www.alcohols.co.uk/gin_distillation.php.
