What is a carter?

Most of my family are all from the potteries, Staffordshire. This had a thriving pottery industry in its day. However it looks like one of my relations was a 'carter' this to me sounds more like something to do with mining, anyone know for definate?

CARTER carries or conveys in or as if in a cart

that is the info I have from the occupations and meanings list
so basically moves stuff around

I also think it was put on census to mean anyone who sells things aswell.

I have an ancestor who I know full well had a chainmaking shop yet hes down as a Chain Carter on one census

The occupation of "Carter" preceded the advent of the motor vehicle and described those who worked as drivers or sometimes as assistants on horse drawn carts used for the carriage of goods. The name is still extant today where goods are collected and delivered by horse and cart.

I have made a discovery!! I left researching this particular branch of the family for a while, upon reflection and a recently gained marriage cert, it is in deed 'collier' not carter!
Hard to read the writing as the original document is quite faint and as ever in an untidy hand! Thanks everyone for your help!
