Emanuel Williams

Post by Rob »

I have him on all census's from his birth till his death but cannot find him in 1891.

In 1881 and 1901 it seems he was living at the same address but in 1891 on the image for the same street there seems to be a gap!!

I havent seen him yet.

Perhaps if its blank at his address it has been missed off for some reason?

How did it work then? Did they go round knocking on peoples doors? What happened if you weren't at home?

More or less like we do now.
Schedules were given out to each household, to record who was resident at midnight on a given date. It was then collected by the enumerator who would transcribe in the enumeration books.
Thats what we see, other than 1911, you see the schedules.
The schedule number is what you see in the first colum.

I wonder where he was in 1891.What about if he just didn't fill the form in?
Was there a control? :?

I dont think there could have been much control Rob. Although forms were given out, lots of people in 1891 couldn't read and write and if they happened to be out when the enumerator called to collect the form or to help them fill it in, then they would have been left off. I worked through a road by Powke Lane house by house in the 1901 census, looking for a family I knew lived there at that time because two children were born each side of the end of March when the census was taken and they weren't there. What I did notice though is that there was a chunk of about 20 houses in this particular road that were missing. Must have been lunchtime and the enumerator forgot were he was up to.
