When I was a kid we there was a local chippy called Dirty Dora´s. Dora and her sister (both elderly ladies with humped backs and proper pinnies, did not serve any fish. They just did chips and scollaps (battered potato slices) and batter scraps. Bet Dora would have made pattie but too upmarket for the area probably!
Yep thats them!

It's bad enough when we're all from the same country! I mean how many different names are there for the humble sandwich? I know a few (butty, sarnie, snap?, etc) but I bet there's more!
There's a weird slang going round here, and not having teenage kids probably doesn't help understanding it. If someone asks a question and you don't know the answer you say "fish" - how silly is that?

Re: Pattie and Chips!!!
I think the worst slang I've heard is when the youngsters have reversed the meaning of an existing slang to mean the exact opposite of what the adults mean. The danes have a slang "bear favour" which means that it's really not a good favour that's being done, so negative - the kids say it to mean something positive.
I don't know if it's a concious changing of the meaning, but it does cause misunderstandings, especially if the you don't know about the reversal of the meaning!
