I wonder what happened to daughter Edith in 1901, I can't find a death for her before 1901 so she would have been 16.

Brilliant, two birds with one stone. She's living with her sister; as a domestic servant  I wonder if it was an act of charity or meanness.

I don't know if it's the same one but I've got a dead Jesse in Cuckfield in 1905.

Do you have the Heasman address?

Difficult to tell, there seem to be more than one Silsby family in the area and James is a popular name amongst them, many of them worked on the land, and without an age to cross reference ....

They might have been living on the premises of a restaurant; there seem to be ties with the catering industry and there's a photo amongst those at the address I posted earlier of members of some kind of catering corps group.

If this marriage entry from FreeDMB

Dec 1839
ELLIS, Ann, Cuckfield, 7, 471
ELLIS, James, Cuckfield, 7, 471
Ford, Lydia, Cuckfield, 7, 471
Harding, John, Cuckfield, 7, 471
HEADO_, William Henry, Cuckfield, 7, 471
SHILSON, Minerva, Cuckfield, 7, 471
SELSBY, Charles, Cuckfield, 7, 471 FreeDMB have a note about this being a mis-spelling.
SILSBY, Charles, Cuckfield, 7, 471
STONER, Eliza, Cuckfield, 7, 471

refers to this census entry from FreeCen

1861
Piece: RG9/583 Place: Hurstpierpoint -Sussex Enumeration District: 11
Civil Parish: Twineham Ecclesiastical Parish: -
Folio: 154 Page: 2 Schedule: 7
Address: Mercers
SILSBY Charles Head M M 74 Ag Lab Sussex - Shermanbury
SILSBY Ann Wife M F 69 Sussex - Cowfold
SILSBY James Son U M 24 Ag Lab Sussex - Woodmancote

Then either James' age is wrong or he was born out of wedlock.

And then there's the entry grangers14 found:

grangers14 wrote:Transcribed and looks like Selsby
1871 Barnards Cottage, Twineham
James Selsby, head, 36 ag lab,
Fanny, wife, 30, Ashurst
Phoebe, daur, 6,
Emily, daur, 4,
Jane, daur, 1,
Ruth Attater, visitor, 12, Horsham
William Selsby, Lodger, 26 Ag lab
All others born Twineham

Which seems to point to another James, of a different age again, who would definitely have been born before Charles and Ann were married. I've got a nasty feeling we're looking at two or three different families. :(

Am I right in thinking that the place (Twineham) is the birth place?

Thanks Jimmy, assuming the info is accurate that makes it the wrong family as the James Silsby I'm following was born in Woodmancote. Of course it may well be that the one I'm following is the wrong one  I think our ancestors sat there working out plans of how to make future genealogists suffer.

However, I've spent the last few hours trying to find another James and Fanny Silsby, in that area, with approximately the same dates and can find nothing, maybe they were anarchists who deliberately gave inaccurate info to the census takers. I think I'm going to take up banging my head against the wall, it's less frustrating.
