*Archive?* Dont understand
Morning Ladies and gents.
Whilst searching the BIRTH records for dumfries at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/.
in the 1855 - 1860 search for WOODMAN i seem to find either errors or double entries.
Now for example.
Joseph Woodman was born 1865 but the looking at his marriage records it says he was married in 1891 and was 24 my calculations BAD albeit say he should have been born in 1867. Also their is another entry for a joseph woodman born in 1860, Now their is another jospeh in the family which is Young joseph's dad but i dont think he would be 4 years old when his son was born.
can anyone shed any light on possible errors
Thanks
Nathan

Re: Dont understand
There are quite often errors for birth dates, as people weren't always sure when they were born, enumerators errors, transcription errors, etc.
There could also be other members of the family in the area, cousins uncles etc with the same names as the people you're looking for, or even other unrelated people who have the same name.
Sometimes I've been quite suprised how many people have, what I thourght would be, an uncommon surname!

Re: Dont understand
Thanks for a quick reply.
Yes errors seem too come with age's mostly on the Marriages section.
i have a a great grandfather that was born 1906, married 1932 which would make him 26 but on the sertificate it says he is 24 lol, i dont know which one to believe, weather the marriage guy was right or should i believe the birth certificate. i would tend more to believe the birth certificate but at 26 im sure he would have known how old he was lol

They didn't think so much as to how old they were then, I'd tend to go by a birth certificate too, but census details are quite often innacurate. I look at the other members in the household, if they all match up, then you're on safer ground. It's also always advisable to look at the original image as transcriptions can be innacurate too. Sometimes it's obvious that it's either done by a machine or someone who has their head under their arm!
There are also other annomalies, as adopted children can be down as son/daughter in law! It's always advisable to use several sources to check if you're on the right track.

Re: Dont understand
your certainly up early for the quick replies so thanks.
So far im using the scotlandspeople.gov.uk for all details seems to be the only place i can look for anything to do with scotland, everything is in cursive so im assuimg its all original so it certainly is a challenge. This is my very first time doing something like this and inteh 12 hours ive done it i have found family members back to 1700's from a long line of fisherman "shame im scared of water lol"

Re: Dont understand
Looking at the trancriptions of the census.
there are 2 Joseph Woodmans.
1881.
1860 Annan, Wife, Mary
1866 Annan, Parents Joseph and Margaret
1871.
1861. Annan, parents William and Jane
1865. Annan, parents Joseph and Margaret
Filtering down on Scotlands people there was one birth in 1860 and another in 1865
The other Joseph belongs to another family.
Is your Joseph Sr born England?

Re: Dont understand
thanks grangers14 TBH i dont actually know if were english descent "woodman sounds english " but what i have so far at the top of the tree is
the most senior joseph is from the 1961 census he was 24 at the time so i well just worked backwards lol
joseph Woodman (1837c - 1924) - Margaret Woodman (c1847) havent found a date for margaret yet
They had 2 sons so far
joseph Woodman(1865 - 1931) and Thomas Woodman(1881-1945ish)
Thomas married Elizabeth Scott(c1884) married in 1903
they had a son called
john Scott Woodman(1906 - 1943)
john scott woodman dies in 1943 (apparently fell over board on a minesweeper in scapa flow) his father thomas dies a few years afterwards by drowning at allenby)
but being brand new to this geneology im bloody sure i have messed up somewhere
I would like to say once again thanks grangers for doing a little research for me. i think just jumping in it like i did, it can become confusing

This is far too addictive you know!
Scotlands people can be expensive so you need to try and narrow things down more before you spend a credit! Saying that the Scottish records offer much more than you get on English ones.
