What was a Parish House

Post by expat66 »

I found that my ancestors ( Thomas and Ann KETTLE) , along with their 9 children, were living in the "Parish House", Stock and Bradley in 1851. Their 22 year old daughter Ann is listed as a 'pauper'.

There are other families listed at the Parish House too.
Was this some sort of housing for the poor... or just the name of a building.
Is a Parish House a 'poorhouse?'

Anyone know?

You can always google and see what they come up with:-

Parish house-š
-noun
1.
a building used by a church chiefly for administrative and social purposes.
2.
(especially in the Roman Catholic Church) the residence of a cleric.

It is generally similar to a Community House or "Drop In Centre", i.e somewhere where people can get various types of support and engage in social activites.

It can also refer the living residence of the clergy.

It is not equivalent to a Poor House or Work House but I have also had relatives living in "Parish House".

Some Inns were named Parish House and when I checked my relatives, that is where they were living.
