Soldiers of the Great War

Post by tigmutt »

Hi all,

I am new to this, and have spent about a month obsessing with research on my family, CANDELENT (from Birmingham), and in particular its part in the Great War. If anyone was able to help with this, it would be great. This is what I know so far, and I would love to know dates they enlisted, where they served and any other details of their service history:

Private Henry Joseph Candelent, Z1637, 5th Rifle Brigade. Gassed in France, survived but suffered for the rest of his life.

Private George Candelent, 36604, 2nd Btn Devonshire Regiment. Born 1882, KIA 24 April 1918 at Villers-Bretonneux. Married to Emily, living at 5 Bredon Terrace, Brookfield Road, Birmingham. I have the war diary relevant to his final battle, but nothing else.

Private Thomas Candelent, 53077, Worcestershire Regiment: I have no details at all.

Private Harold Candelent, 11th Btn Worcestershire Regiment: I have no details at all.

They were all from the Aston/Handsworth/Hockley area of Birmingham.

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Tigmutt welcome to the forum

think you might be best posting there names in the military section near the bottom post under (Researching Individuals)
A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

From "National Roll of the Great War 1914-1918"

CANDELENT, H.J, L/Corporal, Rifle Brigade.

He volunteered in 1914, and after completing a period of training, proceeded to France early in the following year. here he tok part in numerous battles and englagements during the whole period of hostilities, and was wounded on three occasions. He holds the 1914-15 Star and the General Service and Victory Medals and was demobilised in 1919.
