Povey Family of Ladywood

Post by dudleylad »

Im looking for more information of the relatives past and present of my future father in law

His father was Arthur Basil Povey born 12 September 1912 who married Gladys Cooper in 1941

Arthurs father was called Hubert Povey born 17th September 1887 at Western Road Workhouse,he married Lily Jones born 1892 in 1910

I have tracked Lilys family I believe but the birth certificate gives his mother as an Harriett Povey from West Bromwich (I have found who I believe to be her) but no father is on the birth certificate so im more inclined to believe he was illegitimate even though on his wedding certificate he gives his fathers name as Arthur Povey

Hubert is living with a family called the Humpages in 1891 and in 1901 (infact his surname is down as Humpage in 1901 living in Icknield Port Road (the same address given on his marriage certificate)

Any help would be appreciate

Hubert and Lily also worked on the fairs I believe from time to time and he also may have been known as Reuben

I think ive found that Harriett and Arthur on the 1891 census hes an engine driver so perhaps not

But your theory could be correct

The Harriett I have found lived in West Bromwich with mother and sisters her mother was a caretaker of a church

We always thought the fairground side were on Lily Jones side but we can find the evidence there as her father etc were all chain and brickmakers

I know this isn't any help but hey! what a coincidence.....

1901:
Hubert age 14 was living at no 203 Icknield Port Road
and my Grandmother Clara Fradley age 13 was living at 6bk of 206

I wonder if they knew each other.............
If you would like to have your ancestors photo's included in our Gallery, please send me a pm.

What a coincidence, it stands a chance they did know each other it was a tight knit community in them days by the sounds of it.

We have great problem with my fiancees dads side trying to seperate close friends from family as his mom always refered to everyone as family

It appears he definitely was illegitimate registered in the mother's surname.

It was not uncommon for illegitimate persons to 'invent' a father when they married to avoid shame

Maybe this is another Emma? ...

Humpage James W. Bromwich 6b 1431

Don't know if this is relevant here. A Charles Foster b. 1841 Birmingham (see 1891 census), had a sister Emma. Maybe she married the real James Humpage?

I agree. it's looking like Hubert's mum might have been Emma.
