Arc tbc................Alfred DAKIN b1866, Smethwick
First of all thankyou all for your lovely welcomes... I thought you would be a nice bunch!
Here is my first puzzle which I am stuck with:
My great grandmother was Mary Ann EVANS (born Langley abt 1879) she married Albert KETTLE in 1903.
On the 1911 census Albert and Mary Ann are living at 61, Langley Rd, Langley Green with their 4 children and a lodger... listed as Wilfred OAKIN on the 'Find My Past' website but when I saw the original it is clearly Alfred DAKIN... aged 45, single, born in Smethwick...working at the chemical works.
Now there are many EVANS and I hope I have found the right family.... but Mary Ann's marriage certificate lists her father as Edward EVANS.
I found an Edward and Mary EVANS living in Rood End in 1891 with their numerous children ( including a Mary aged 10) and a nephew Alfred DAKIN ( aged 18, born Smethwick)
Then in 1881 there is an Edward and Hannah EVANS ( Edward appears to have married twice...this his first wife Hannah DEARNE) they are living in Moat Lane, Warley Wigorn with 5 children matching those on the 1891 census ( including Mary..10 months) and another 'son' ..Alfred DAKIN aged 15.. born in Spon Lane.
Is this the same Alfred?.... who is he?... son/ nephew/ lodger? ...I am hoping that if I could pin this chap down I might be able to confirm if I have the correct EVANS family.
From what I have seen on this site so far.. you people are really good at this!!
Can anyone help?
Thankyou

Re: Alfred DAKIN born 1866, Smethwick and the EVANS family
This is the only Marriage I could find for an Edward Evans and Hannah Dec Qtr 1866
EVANS Edward Wolverhampton 6b 800
FLETCHER Charlotte Wolverhampton 6b 800
Mason John Wolverhampton 6b 800
SMITH Hannah Wolverhampton 6b 800
Cannot find one for a Hannah Dakin between 1864 and 1870, being as Alfred Dakin seems to be in the Evans household on every Census, I guess you must have the correct family at first glance ex pat, still need all the Census details though to be sure.

This looks like Alfred in 1871 Windmill Lane Smethwick, cannot see an obvious connection with the Evans family

Yes I think she is mine!....it would be nice to have a definite link to the Black Country tree. Is there any way I can check whether her husband Edward is the father of my Mary Ann EVANS, when there are so many EVANS?
Mary Ann's birth certificate if you can find the right one, will tell you her parents and occupations and address, which should tie up with the Census, do you have a Baptism for her, that will hold details in the Parish Register which can be looked up or a copy sent for.
Hope this helps from Linell.
Sorry not found anymore on Alfred Dakin, perhaps he was just taken in by the Evans and Kettles, they must have known the Dakin family, Smethwick would have been a small community back then.

Re: Alfred DAKIN born 1866, Smethwick and the EVANS family
Thankyou Linell,
Yes I think maybe Alfred was a friend of the family? and maybe I have got the right EVANS if he keeps showing up living with them?
I will investigate Mary Ann's birth/baptism a bit further... I only have her birthdate from the census records.. haven't managed to pin down a birth or baptism record yet..will keep looking.

Re: Alfred DAKIN b1866, Smethwick / EVANS family
Thanks Northern Lass!
I have had some new ideas on this one...
on the 1871 census I found the following DAKINS:-
1871 Church St, Harborne
Arthur DAKIN 29 labourer at glassworks born Tileby(?) Leics
Sarah DAKIN 28 born Oldbury
Alfred DAKIN 5 born Smethwick
Arthur DAKIN 4 born Oldbury
William DAKIN 5months born Smethwick
That would make this Alfred DAKIN's birthdate 1866 and the place of birth is the same too.
So are his parents Arthur and Sarah?
I also found this marriage in 1864
Arthur DAKIN Sarah DARN Smethwick, ST Paul, Sandwell Reg Office 9/1/46
I can't find any DARNs.... so I am wondering whether this should be DEARN?
In which case.... could this be Sarah DEARNE a sister of Hannah DEARNE, daughter of Ephraim ( on the BC Connections tree)
That would make the Alfred DAKIN I have living with my relatives in 1881... Hannah's nephew... and maybe he is listed as son because they have taken him in for some reason... did something happen to his parents?
What do you clever people think?....does anyone know of any DARNS?.... or is my guess a reasonable one?

Hi ex pat, you would need to get the marriage certificate for Alfred and Sarah:-
I also found this marriage in 1864
Arthur DAKIN Sarah DARN Smethwick, ST Paul, Sandwell Reg Office 9/1/46
See if Sarah is the daughter of Ephraim also.
I think you should start a new thread for this search, it's getting a bit too long and hard to follow.
