Hello

Post by expat66 »

I am so excited to have found this site after finding the BlackCountry site first. I have been researching our family tree since last August so I am still a 'novice' at all this ( I'm also unfamiliar with forums!) We currently live in Canada so pretty much all my research has been online. I am now beginning to go back over what I have on Ancestry.co.uk and doublechecking everything. I have already acquired some copy certificates but as the costs soon mount up I have been selective about which ones I order.
My family are from the Midlands... my Dad from the Black Country... surnames on his side include KETTLE, TAYLOR, EVANS, DEARNE, HOOPER and HEWITT .. we also appear to have ties with the DAKINS ( though I have yet to tie them in )
My mother's family all lived in the jewellry quarter of Birmingham ( though I have since found that the GREAVES family were well established in Harborne and also Halesowen). Surnames on my Mum's side include GREAVES, ECCLESHALL, RATHBONE, COOKE, JORDAN, HIPKISS and BASSETT.
The biggest mystery I would love to solve is what happened to James GREAVES (born 1837).. my great great grandfather... a tin plate worker who appears to have gone to Rio de Janeiro.... I have heard all sorts of stories from family members... he was murdered/ he murdered a business partner/ he was something to do with diamonds?!... all seem very far fetched... but his wife had remarried by 1880 and was listed as a widow on the marriage certificate. I last find James on the 1871 census but nothing after that... a very frustrating 'brick wall'!
I look forward to sharing stories... I have so far found the people involved in Genealogy to be a very friendly and interesting bunch!

Welcome to the forum!
I've also done most of my research over the internet, and this forum has been a big help as well! :-)
Hope you solve your brick wall, it sounds intriguing!
