DNA testing

DNA testing

Does anyone have any knowledge on how it all works?
Am I correct in thinking that if my sister and I both have a DNA test we will get better results?
And what tests to go for i.e.
Ancestry.com have 3 tests
1. Paternal Lineage DNA Test (Y-chromosome 33 or 46)
2. Maternal Lineage DNA Test (mtDNA)
3. Paternal & Maternal Lineage DNA Test
Other companies may have different tests

Once we have these results ... Then what?
Any recommendations as to which company to go for?
And cost
Now DNA Testing by Ancestry.com will only charge for DNA testing by US Dollars which I think is rather strange when I asked them about it they just gave me an online conversion chart!!!

Sorry lots of questions but just think at the end of the day we are all related

One thing I've speculated about, is that you might get a suprise you weren't expecting. Somewhere there could be a child that doesn't fit the known ancestors. Maybe due to an adoption or maybe because the father wasn't the one recorded!

The Maternal will get you back further but only proof that you are related, not a direct ancester.

It can be used to trace you back to one of the original Eves.

Paternal is more accurate in proving a direct lineage but it depends on the size of the database they have to compare it against as to how far back you can go.

Paternal/Maternal combined helps them determine your mixutre of ethnic origins. I.e What percentage Eastern Eurpoean, African, Asian etc.
