Sailors and locating information about them.

I'm looking for possible crew lists/occupational information about my partners grandfather.

Wallace Henry DAVIDSON was a sailor at the time of registering his son's birth in 1939.
There isn't any other information about his occupation on there.

I don't even know where to begin searching for possible employment records.

Any help greatly appreciated.

First place you look is The National Archives.

Use the Advanced Search and tick "Merchant Shipping and seamen" and "Transport and communications".

Use combinations of his names and initials as they were not terribly consistent on how to record their names.
