Re: Haines/Hillman/Silsby antecedents
That explains one of the brick walls we've hit. Interestingly my grandfather Sidney Haines' sister-in-law Elsie (married to his brother Reg) worked for Henry Longhurst (the golf commentator) acting as house-keeper/carer, looking after first his Mother-in-law and then his wife Claudine, at the two windmills, Jack and Jill on the South Downs above Clayton (where my Mother was married and my grand-parents are buried. I don't know if that Henry Longhurst was related to the one you've found married to Francis (and that isn't a challengegrangers14 wrote:SRD wrote:grangers14 wrote:The parts in red that it says are unconfirmed, do you have that info but just not checked it out?

It's mainly been deduced by cross referencing indeces etc. We don't have entries, certificates or licences.

Oh goodness you dont know what you are missing! All the excitement waiting for it to arrive!

You should really, its the only way to confirn you are following the right people.
Fanny is often a nickname for Frances. That marriage isnt correct actually, that Frances married Henry Longhurst!

On freebmd you find James Silsby but the page number isnt right, its been transcribed wrong if you look at the image.
Fanny Blake is on a page on her own.

Re: Haines/Hillman/Silsby antecedents
I'm having difficulty finding James and Fanny Silsby on the 1881 census.
The best I've come across is the following mention that I've copied into my notes but can't for the life of me remember where I found it.
(note to self: improve your record keeping SRD or you're not going to get anywhere.)
James Silsby 45 Cuckfield, Hurstpierpoint
James Silsby 8 Cuckfield, Hurstpierpoint
Fanny Silsby 41 Cuckfield, Hurstpierpoint
I think it's interesting that in the 1871 census James & Fanny seem to be having children regularly, and by the 1891 census they seem to be at it again, with the earlier children either left home or dead, children aged 10 and 6, but no teenagers, which suggests to me that:
1. They had a string of early deaths.
2. One or other of them moved out of the family home for a while (Fanny is marked up as a nurse so might she have gone away to live in somewhere?)
3. Illness or accident that might have prevented the conjugals.
Any thoughts anyone?

Re: Haines/Hillman/Silsby antecedents
Cracking stuff, thanks grangers14.
I wonder what happened to daughter Edith in 1901, I can't find a death for her before 1901 so she would have been 16.
I don't know if it's the same one but I've got a dead Jesse in Cuckfield in 1905.
Do you have the Heasman address?

I seem to remember this pattern from someone on Who do you think you are? and there was an illness reason but I can't remember what it actually was.-- I have just had a flash back and thought that it might have been an STD -- I hope that is my vivid imagination! -- could be completely wrong -- but?
