Try finding the old Newspapers usually on micro fiche at the County Archives, surprising what you can come up with.

Always start with the Trade Directories.

TheGenealogist allows you to search hundreds of them at once...which is brilliant!

I tried searching just for Ormerod in Lancashire ones and got hundreds of hits.....

There is an Ormerod Road that is giing me all those false hits.

So I put in Ormerod Cotton as the search and got, in the 1914 Burnley Barrett's Directory

Ormerod Edmondson Ltd. Cotton Manufaturers, Moss shed. Tel. 6x; h. 5 Mosley Street.

If it is later in the century then searching telephone books is also good. It appears this company had the 6th telephone in the district!

In the 1927-1928 Southport Seed's Directory I got..

36 Coudray Road. Hall Oliver Omerod, cotton goods mfr.

Ancestry has an excellent collection indexed telephone books.

Many industries have a central body that companies have to register with (i.e for Trade Union, licensing, regulation etc).

Most of those central bodies are located in London and only a few of the relevant books have been indexed and placed on line but sometimes it is worth trying the person name in Access To Archives or the normal Nation Archives to see what pops up.
