The census above don't say that William is a son of Thomas,

I was thinking that as the three blacksmiths are down as "Head" -- that there were three families living in one large house but that all the men though related considered themselves to be "Head" of their bit.

William (and Caleb?) could be the son of a brother James of the younger Thomas and they in turn could be sons of the older Thomas -- ages would fit this.
