We don't have a telly, and if that historian bloke Starkey is anything to go by it's about as historically accurate as 1066 And All That.

Like good wine beer should be at room temperature as it lifts the floral notes on the bouquet, if it has to be served chilled beyond redemption it can only mean that it tasted of nowt in the first place.

Nothing very 'floral' about Ma Pardoes, as you will know if you have been there :?:

I knew about it as I was secretary of the local CAMRA branch in NW Kent where I lived. When I visited my grandparents in Compton Road, Cradley Heath I would stroll up past Cradley Speedway stadium, turn left at the lights (where there used to be a big Edwardian mock tudor pub, awful place, full of fruit machines, juke boxes and muzak) carry on up the hill and come out virtually opposite Ma Pardoe's. In those days it was being run by her daughter (I think). Not only was the beer superb, and yes, it did carry strong floral notes as many of the lighter Midlands beers did, it was my kind of pub, slightly scruffy, popular with both locals and visitors who enjoyed their beer and a chat, although I was amazed to see a telly on a stand above the bar (not something one saw in my part of the world) and I couldn't believe it when everything stopped when Corrie came on; darts and dominoes would be left mid-game, conversations suspended (and those who tried to chat were shushed), and it was impossible to order a drink until the mid programme break, even then if you didn't get in quick you had to wait 'til the end of the programme. As soon as it finished everything was back to normal. I was desolated one year when I visited to find it closed and pleased to see it re-opened, but it had been extended and gentrified, the old family had gone and the beer wasn't quite as good so, although it's good to see it open again, it isn't the wonderful place it used to be.

Another of my favourite hostelries was the Swan with Two Necks on the corner of Sydney Road and Lower High Street. That's gone now. :(

Haven't been there recently, but a mate called in last year and said it had been even more gentrified and wasn't the place it had been, they even had a massive iron grill round the stove. :o
