Re: British in India?
Oh Thanks Jimmy!
Ive found his pension records on Ancestry. But I think he was married a couple of times.
I think first wife Lizzie Allen, makes that right for his first born, William Walter Allen Mason. Then Mary Elizabeth Sullivan nee Williams.
It was that bit I didnt understand
Plodding through.
Thanks again.
Jo

Re: British in India?
Married both.
You could claim children as "extra marital" but you had to name the mother.
So if you were dipping your wick on foreign shores you could make sure the children left behind got a portion of your pay.
The army wanted to know the marital status so they could avoid mistakes in any correspondence.

Re: *Completed* British in India?
Hi, I'm new to this forum and have read with great interest the info on the Masons in India. It may just be coincidence but my grandfather's name was William Walter Allen Mason, appearing to be the son of Walter William Mason and Lizzie (nee Allen). I don't really know anything about my grandfather because he died when my father was about 6/7. My grandmother's name was Iren Flanders Louisa Mason (nee Fish) and they got married in Fulham, London in 1916. The name Walter appears a lot through the generations and continued through to my own father, but not to my brother - he has the middle name of William which was also popular it seems.
I am trying to put together a family tree on my father's side and if the info is correct and there is a connection then it would be a great place to start.
Tina

Re: *Completed* British in India?
Hi Jo, thank you for responding to my message. What caught my attention was the name of William Walter Allen Mason, seems rather a coincidence that a name like that should have been used more than once!!! In all the info I have collated so far there is no mention of ....... but who knows if I can go back far enough through the generations it may crop up although I fear the name Mason was not unusual. As a family we lived in Kent and my father was an only child so there is not a lot to go on. I'll keep trying when I have a bit more time, have done quite well on grandmother's family and strangely enough her grandparents had the surname of Mason! A bit odd.
Thanks again for your response
Best wishes to you

Hi Jo
I have just typed out a long private message for you but lost it along the way. Before I type it out again can you let me know how I send a private message to you please. I couldn't see anything that indicated "send message"!! and the word Submit didn't seem to do anything either!
