I bought a great "thing" for cooking oven chips. From Matalan, it's measures about 10" x 10" and is kind of black plasticky webbing. Not a very good description, but you will know it when you see it. Great for pizzas also.

Fair point, but you can't call 'em proper chips. It's like those things that one gets from the freezers in the cheap supermarkets, they're no more sausage rolls than I am but they have something about them that makes them absolutely gorgeous. I think there's some chemical, like MSG, that stimulates all of the flavour senses, that the plastic food companies have discovered but are keeping secret, that they spread liberally on all their worst products.

Northern Lass thanks for the tips , I normally cook them on a glass tray type of container , a 1000 cals per chip I will have to do a bit more walking to get the cals off. I will look out for one of those thingy's from Matalan that AuntieEm got .

Where there's a will there's a way they say SRD, I'll let my other half try that it saounds a bit messy but he should like it using his Maurice Piper potatoes.

Yep, I remember the old chip pan we had when I was a kid! Very messy.
(I also remeber my parents argueing about something - a very rare occurence) - Dad threw the pan and dented it. He picked it up, stormed out of the house, we could then hear him hammering the dent out. By the time the poor man came back in we were all (including my mum) rolling on the floor laughing our heads off!

We are doing it the other way round Lamb shanks in about 30 mins and steak and chips tomorrow.

I love lamb hotpot with the potato sliced and cooked on the top.

You're not making it right. Stew covers all those things like Boeuf Bourguignone, Beef Carbonnade, Stifatho, Goulash, curry (in it's most well known sense), Osso Buco, steak and kidney pie and pudding (that's only stew wrapped in pastry), Bouillabaisse, and I don't know how many more of the most glorious foods known to man and woman.

What's right with it!
I mad a discovery about stew, all the flavour in the sauce, so I eat the sauce but leave the meat - that way it just about edible! Oh that and there has to be peas as a side dish!!!!
I'm talking about irish stew, osso bucco (has the best sauce!) and the stuff my old folks made with beef - they had to threaten me before I'd eat that!
