Evening all,
My name is Steve, living in Birmingham.

Was thinking of hunting down my family history mainly because I know so little about it. For reasons i'm still unsure of I have lost contact with most of them. I'm in the process of trying to track down some info to get me started. Tried mother but divorced 20ish yrs ago remarried and retired to Spain :o So she hasn't much for me. I'll have to call to get any memories from her. With dad out of the picture as ive not got any details of where he may be or even if he's still living  Ive tried to contact one of his sisters (one of the few family members I have contact details for) still waiting for her reply.

So in the meantime I'm researching how and whether to do the research  but just seem to be getting more and more confused

Hi Steve,
I hope you enjoy the forum and our company.
As Peter said your parents marriage certificate will help, if you or they dont have it you can still buy one. If you dont know your mothers maiden name check your birth certificate.
Give a post in general section when you have them details and we can help from there.

Hi Steve and welcome to the forum.

Even with the small amount you have it may be possible to get quite a bit off the internet. It is difficult for us to help on the open forum because we don't deal with "live" people -- but with your mother's maiden name and tracking down your parents' marriage certificate -- depending on their age you could soon get back to 1911 and then it is off you go -- it does depend a bit on luck and which surnames you are going for!

Happy Hunting and let us know how we can help

Thx for the replys feeling at home already  ,

The only thing she says she has is a marriage cert. I'm thinking is more likely to be her 2nd one as she didnt take much over to Spain to keep costs down so I'll have to wait till she posts me a copy. I do know her maiden name though so I'm ok there.

can you view certs anywhere? so you can jot down the info including a note of where it is kept or is it better to just purchace the required certs as and when?

Hello Steve and Welcome to the Forum. My first foray into tracing my family was years ago looking for my grandparents marriage on fiche in Birmingham Archives. I didn't have any of my dad's family to ask questions, and all I knew were their names. I started at the date of my dad's eldest sister's date of birth and worked backwards until I found it. All you need is your parents surnames to get a certificate and away you go ... Good Luck :-)
There's no place like home ......
