Daft question - Marriage licence
I thourght I'd ordered a copy of the marriage licence, but I got a copy of the marriage certificate. Are these two things the same?
The couple in question were under age and therfore married by licence, so I assumed, maybe in error, that I might may able to get more info from the licence.

A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

Re: Daft question - Marriage licence
Just checked my mails, and I clearly write licence not certificate - the mail I recieve in return does say marriage record - maybe I should have queried this. I think I'll get in touch with them again, as it's a bit annoying and dosn't get me any further along. My original e-mail actually gives all the info contained in the certificate!

Re: Daft question - Marriage licence
I'm not sure that they would have the marriage licence there in any case. So probably they just mis-understood your request.

Re: Daft question - Marriage licence
I understand it to say that a marriage licence could end up in various places, and probably did not survive.
The marriage allogation looks most helpful and would be at the diocese' archive.
And perhaps would not have any extra information?

Thanks Gardener, looks as though I need to check the diocese archives. I've also written a polite mail to Sandwell Archives, so I'll see what they say before going any further!

Hi sue - you might have more luck at the Staffordshire Archives - staffordshire.record.office@staffordshire.gov.uk - they hold the original records of the stuff held at Sandwell, which is mostly on micofilm. By the way, I was in Sandwell Archives today and they couldn't find anything about your Harvey Jinks, only his name in the Post Office Directory for 1937 ... sorry.

Thanks Maggie, I really appreciate you looking Harvey up!
I can see I'm going to have to make a genealogy trip soon!!!
I'll try the Staffordshire archives too!

Re: Daft question - Marriage licence
Just looked in the directories on Ancestry and found him in West Bromwich in 1932 - Shopkeeper of 24 Railway Road and 1940 - the same but 24 Railway Street. Shall I look him up there on the electoral register ?

Next entry to Harvey in 1940 is Miss Annie Maria Jinks, Newsagent, 12 Claypit Lane

I've got him there too, what I'm really interested in is his time as a councillor, so I don't think the electoral roll will give much. He was at 24 Railway Street until his death in 1954. Thanks for the offer anyway

Annie Maria was his sister! She took over the shop from her mother, and never married. My mum can remember people asking if she was related to Miss Jinks, from Claypit Lane - she was apparently quite formidable!

Sue you should have asked them first if they hold copies of Marriage Licenses. The one I have for a Dudley Marriage was at Worcester Record Office. As Maggie says it is more than likely at Stafford Record Office, that is the County Archive, but as I said you need to ask them at Sandwell first off. Good luck from Linell.
