Took mine down on the 5th and was just dragging the tree towards the car so I could dump it at the park recycling skips when I spotted a Council gardening van parked right outside my house as the men were cutting trees in the road so I gave them a pleading look and a cup of tea and my tree disappeared as if by magic!

Here in Iceland today is called Þrettándinn which means the Thirteenth. Shakespeare's Twelfth Night is often translated as The Thirteenth Evening, bit confusing. But as you say, calender changes cloud the issue.

Anyhow, usually on the 6th of January there are big bonfires, fancydress, special songs, and permission to shoot off fireworks. Tonight it is howling a gale and supposedly -30°C if you count the wind chill so it is all postponed til the weekend.

The 13 Father Christmases that arrived one at a time in the run up to Christmas, departed likewise one at a time and the last one goes today, back to his mountain cave where he lives with his mum and dad and cat. Bet it is cold up there!

I like the sound of that tradition!

Do you have the lent thing in iceland, where there's a cat in a barrel, and you bash the barrel with a stick until it breaks? (There are sweets in the barrel now, all the kids dress up in fancy dress and got trick or treating)

Yes, but only cos they nicked it from Denmark! It used to be done at Akureyri in the north of the country - it was a very Danish town. It is still taken much more seriously there than here in Reykjavik. On the Monday it is Bolludagur and kids wake early and beat their parents (still in bed) with a special wand. This earns them cream buns, I think the kids used to go house to house and catch teh housewife still in bed so they got a bun from each place. Sprengidagur is Tuesday and you eat split pea soup made with salted lamb - eat til you burst is the idea. Then comes Ash Wednesday with the dressing-up and and singing for sweeties, and they used to sneak around a pin a little material sack on your back but this is not done anymore.

I make the cream buns, and cook the pea soup but my kids also demand pancakes!

(As I write this there are loads of fireworks beings sent up somewhere. Party time again!)

I love the danish pea soup! I know what you lot will say, but until you've tried it.......
They tried to introduce pancake day here a few years ago, it was just a ploy to sell pancake pans. I was a tiny bit annoyed, as it felt like they were hijacking my pancake day - which we do have. My husband makes the best pancakes in the world with vanilla and cardamom in them. And I've introduced my friends to sugar and lemon!
Luckily pancake day didn't catch on, so we get to keep it for ourselves.

One thing I have noticed is that the majority of Danes, haven't got a clue why they have certain traditions - I know that shrove tuesday comes before lent, which comes before easter, but they haven't got a clue that their tradition is connected to lent even when the name "Fastelavn" has fasting in the name! When I mention lent and that a lot of people give up certain things during it, I got asked if I was catholic!

Nicking the thread a bit here - but I do love pancakes. We have them usually once a week. I like mine with raisins and sugar - but the best pancake I have every tasted was in Kizbuhel. As big as a dinner plate - covered in ice cream, syrup and nuts. I have on occasion had this instead of a main meal. They also make one covered in blueberries, they give you a piece of lemon with this otherwise you get purple teeth.
