*Archive?* Martha Louisa BARNES
My great grandfather was born as Francis Scannel FOX in Newbury in 1910 to John Joseph FOX a tailor from Glasgow and locally born Martha Louisa FOX, they were both quite old when he was born and I'm pretty sure that Martha Louisa's maiden name was BARNES (Francis S FOX changed his surname to BARNES in 1935, no one seems to know why but he wrote a letter to a newspaper in Devon in 1970, asking if he'd still be able to get war time credits (I don't know think he ever got them, not sure though).
I'm pretty sure that this is her Birth Index, since the birth place and date and name match up.
Name: Louisa M Barnes
Year of Registration: 1866
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Calne
County: Wiltshire
Volume: 5a
Page: 68
However, I can only find her on the 1891 and 1901 censuses when she is already married. Both show her as born in Broad Hinton, which is relatively close to Calne. Any ideas on why I can't find her on the 1871 and 1881 censuses?
Merry Xmas everybody!

No, I haven't - actually I couldn't seem to find a fitting marriage on Ancestry.co.uk.
I wondered about the Bowood census as well, seems a long way from Broad Hinton but it is very close to Calne...if that census was correct then this is the fitting 1870s census.

Re: Martha Louisa BARNES
Ok, I'm thinking to check out this marriage certificate..
Name: John Joseph Fox
Year of Registration: 1884
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Marlborough
County: Wiltshire
Volume: 5a
Page: 176
I can't seem to find a matching Barnes married in that year or place but n the 1891 census, it shows that the first child Edward A was born in 1885 in Marlborough. Worth a go, do you think?

Re: Martha Louisa BARNES
Those censuses are the ones I was talking about but what makes you think Herbert Slater could be a brother? It says boarder on the Census and they are born in totally different parts of the country.
It seems too much of a coincidence that he would have changed his name to BARNES and at the same time there was someone born a BARNES with his mother's first names nearby and on the right year, don't you think?
The fact there's a John Joseph Fox and Martha Louisa married in Marlborough in the same year is interesting but the only Martha Louisa Sadler I can seem to find is Tamworth born and that doesn't really match up with the info on the census does it?
I was under the impression that another relative had FRANCIS S Fox''s birth certificate but it turns out it's his death certificate, the birth certificate should have his mother's maiden name on right?
