I hope someone can give me guidance - ancestry has just highlighted a will for me probate Lichfield 1865
My problem I have never had to obtain a will before -- what is the procedure and where do I go/send for it?

Try this website. http://www.ancestor-search.info/NAT-Probate.htm
It might be possible to pay and get it online. I did that a couple of years ago - I think it cost about £5.00

Thank you I may take you up on that -- it could depend on the weather and my patience levels as I am not thaaaaat far from Lichfield so maybe time permitting I might make it pver there during the holiday period.-- I did not realise that we could access wills in the same way as marriages etc and that they stayed in the area. -- I live and learn.

Re: Wills--
If you order them from York, it costs a fiver, takes about two weeks (I think), I got a photocopy of a handwritten copy of the original. I think the handwritten copy was quite old too! But mostly legible. I transcribed it myself with added punctuation (there is no punctuation on wills!!!), just to make it more readable - it was only two pages long, but that helped with sorting out what was what!
My only complaint is that you have top send a cheque, which means I have to get my parents to help out, as they don't accept credit card payments!
I've found loads of wills on ancestry now, I wont be sending off for all of them, but certainly some of them might help me get a bit further back!

Has this helped MG
I am going to flag to archive this one now unless otherwise advised
or I can move to general discussion as it is a general thread on wills
