Inquests

Can anyone tell me how I can get any information on inquests that were held. I have a few realtives who have died in unusual circumstances and understand there would probably have been an inquest.

For example my great, great grandfather William Macklin died on the 13/12/1918. It says he died of a dislocation of thigh, crushed by a motor car. It says an inquest was held in North Worcestershire on the 16/12/1918.

I seem to have this info in my files...

the usual advice is that inquest reports are unlikely to have
survived ( unless the case was of great public interest) because the
records were the personal property of the coroner and he could destroy
them

A local newspaper report of the time is likely to be a better source
of information. The daily local papers especially often ran very full
reports of the evidence on the same day or the day after the inquest -
and in those days the inquest was held very soon
after the death, not weeks later as happens now.

I have found that newspaper reports are very very detailed.

Thanks for that, do you know how I would go about getting information on what newspapers were around at the time. Are they held at an archive somewhere?

if this is his death then unless you no the exact location start with stourbridge or do you have the death cert and problerly start with the place he lived or where he died

Hi PJ yes the archives would advise you on the newspapers of the time. So maybe Dudley or Worcs archives.
Worth an email to them.

The William Salt Library in Stafford holds a lot of Staffs Newspapers, such as the Staffordshire Advertiser. linell.

this should have been in the local papers of the time I will ask at Dudley archives as they should have info on this
and will ask about the coroners reports too
