Hi
I'm totally new to genealogy and appreciate that it will be necessary to dig into my pocket for a search site and, possibly, for software that appeals to me.
I have picked Ancestry.co.uk as a search site with the additional need to subscribe to a 1911 census site, although Findmypast seems to have it as standard. Ancestry was picked because I am lead to believe that they have the greatest number of records.
I like the detail in Family Historian 4.1.3 software.
I would appreciate confirmation or recommended alternatives, please. Additionally are there any other sources you would regard as essential
Regards
Paul Lewis, Wakefield, UK

I'm on both, but prefer ancestry. One word of warning though - you'll get a lot of "possible" ancestors, always always always double check everything, especially if it comes from someone elses tree, as some people accept things blind and can lead you down the wrong track.
I use their shoebox function for records I'm not sure about, so that I can easily find them again when I have more information.

I use Ancestry and likr Snoopy sue say's you get a lot of possibles that need double checking, I have a subscription for the 1911 on Findmypast and like that for searching.
Softeware I have always used Family Treemaker till I got my new PC with Vista on and I can't get it to work with mine, it was a old version so purchased the FTM 2010 and it still does not work, so now I use Family Historian 4 and like it .

You can also make contact with others using Ancestry. (I find it easier than Genes Reunited, as I don't have so many "silly" matches - I hate their hot matches!)
