Annie Elizabeth Trowsdale/Trousdale
Hello All,
I have been bitten by the bug and have started tracing my family tree - it is very addictive. However, I've hit a bit of a brick wall and I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers.
I'm hoping to trace an Annie Elizabeth TROWSDALE (sometimes spelt TROUSDALE), who was born in September 1888 in Sleights, North Yorkshire. She was from a large farming family (the SEDMANs), had an illigitimate son (my grandfather) Arthur TROWSDALE in 1905, and as a result was turned out of home by her stepfather. A friend of the family managed to find a marriage to Alexander GILLIS in 1917, using local records, and believe she became a widow in 1918 (I have his service records), but can't find anything else.
With the results of the 1921 census not due to be released for another 11 years, where else can I look to find out what happened to her after her husband's death? Where can I look to see if she married someone else and/or if she had any further children?
I really would like to see if I can find out what happened to her, and any information/pointers would be greatfully received!
Many thanks
DonellaA

Has you father/mother never mentioned any aunts or uncles, who would have been your grandfathers siblings?

Re: Another Newbie!!!
Thanks for all your messages welcoming me to the site!
cid - thanks for those details, it certainly looks like that this is their child. My grandfather would never talk about his family. There was some scandal surrounding his birth that was hushed up and he never saw his mother again after 1919ish. She seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth!!! We know she got married to an Alexander Gillis, who was in the army, but there are a couple of men with this name, one in the Durham Light Infantry and one in the East Lancashire Regiment, so we're not sure which one is her husband or if it's the same man who has swapped regiments. We are pretty sure he died around 1918 and that Annie Elizabeth TROWSDALE became a widow.
If I wanted to check military records, would you recommend any sites?
Many thanks for all your help so far!
Nell

Re: Annie Elizabeth Trowsdale/Trousdale
I dont know if you have seen Arthur is with his granparents in 1911 in Whitby, Annie not there though.
There is an Annie E Sedman as a servant for the Clarkson family in Whitby, wonder if thats her?
By the way was Alexander from Thornaby?

Re: Annie Elizabeth Trowsdale/Trousdale
Hi Jo, thanks so much for your help so far - sorry I haven't been on in a while but I have been doing some more checking and the friend who has been helping me has been busy.
With regards to the second child, I will make some further checks. I think I've tracked down a baby - Mabel Winifred Trowsdale, born in 1908 - possibly in the Workhouse in Whitby (am about to check the address on the 1911 census) who's mother is Annie E Trousdale.
As for the military records, thanks for the ones you found. I've since sent away for the details and am not too sure that they are the for the right man. The only thing that puts me off is this - we have the death certificate for a baby called Alexander Gillis, who's death was registered by his father, also called Alexander Gillis, on the 21st March 1918. The Alexander Gillis we have the military records for died in France in May 1918 and he was just a Private, whereas on the death certificate for the baby, the father was a corporal.
Do you think that this is the same man and that he could have lied on the certificate to make him sound better than he was, or do you think this is another Alexander Gillis?
Thanks again for all your help so far - I will keep you posted on the census results for the baby, and the lead for the Clarkson domestic servant.
