*ARC TBC* -- Sigh - So many Dawes!

Post by Peter080249 »

The Dawes side of my family are driving me mad.

Can anybody help me with the birth details of:

Charles Dawes about 1844 Tewin Herts
John (Jno) Dawes about 1846 Tewin Herts

They appear in a number of census returns, in 1851 they are shown as the sons of Isaac, but in fact they are grandsons (1861 census) and don't appear in any with their
parent(s). When I do a search all records (Ancestry) I don't get births, deaths or marriages.

I suspect that Eliza has been at it again!

Many thanks

Peter

Theres a John Alfred Taylor Dawes
1846, Jan-Feb-Mar, Hertfordshire, 6 547
The IGI has, submitted by member,
1846 Tewin, Hertford, Father, Isaac Dawes, Mother, Eliza

Also there is Charles Dawes 1842, Jul-Aug-Sep, Hertfordshire, 6 421

It looks like there is two Charles Dawes born around the same time but cant see the other entry in Births.
Do you have Isaac in 1841?

Jo :)

Hi Jo

yes i,ve seen that John and the date does agree. A Jno is actually shown on the 1851 census with Isaac as the head and both Charles and Jno showing as sons. My problem is ten years later in the 1861 census, they are both still there but this time they are listed as Grandsons which means that Isaa couldn't be the father.

The Elizas are a bit confusing as Isaac's wife was Eliza as was his daughter who when she was young started producing children out of wedlock, William Richard Dawes being one in 1852. I was going to put them both down as Isaacs cildren until I saw the 61 census. That made me wonder if the mother was Eliza (daughter).

Hate to sound thick :-) but what is IGI?

Many thanks

Peter

IGI stands for International Genealogical Index. You can find it here,
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/ ... _form=true

Some entries are extracted from records, some are submitted by members. You do need to check ones that are submitted more closely.

I had seen them on the census later too. May be a marriage certificate would be the best way forward to find fathers name?

Hi Peter, I would also think that daughter Eliza aged 25 in 1851 is the mother of George, Charles and John. I have seen this many times where Grandparents are referred to on the Census as Parents, when an older daughter is infact the mother. As Jo said, you need to check Charles Marriage Certificate and see what that says, bearing in mind that sometimes they did add fathers when they didn't have one............HTH from Linell.
