*Archived* -Samuel STOKES b 1874 Brierley Hill

Post by Steph »

Hi All

Samuel's parents were William (who died 1880) & Hannah (nee POUND), & Samuel was at home until 1891:

1881 139 High St Rowley Regis
Hannah STOKES H W 34 b Wordsley WOR charwoman & general servant
Thomas s 13 ''
William s 11 ''
Arthur s 13 ''
Ezekial s 7 ''
Samuel s 6 ''
Wilford s 5 ''
Freddy s 4 ''."

1891 Church St Cradley
Enoch Sutton H M 33 painter Cradley
Hannah W M 40? ''
Ruth D 9 ''
George S 5 ''
Enoch S 3 ''
Arthur STOKES stepson 19 forge labourer Brierley Hill
Ezekial '' 17 nail pointer ''
Samuel '' 16 cutter in forge ''
Wilfred '' 14? ''
Freddie '' 12 ''."

His mother died 1896, & her younger children were mainly living with older siblings in 1901.

Can't find Samuel in 1901 (have already confirmed with a descendant of the one below who m Martha Jane Bradley is NOT my Samuel)

1901 Water St Kingswinford
Samuel Stokes H M 26 Kingswinford iron pipe dresser
Martha W M 24 Brockmoor
Sydney S 4 Kingswinford
Florrie D 2 ''

By 1905, Samuel was in the Worcester Regiment (according to his brother Wilfred's war record papers), but needless to say, I can't find any papers for Samuel....

If anyone has my Samuel in their tree, I'd love to hear from them.

Thanks

Steph

Hi

Thanks for looking.

It MIGHT be Annie that he married

BRH St Michael 12.7.1903
Samuel STOKES 26 B steelworker Chapel St William labourer
Annie RANDALL 25 S Dudley St William labourer
banns wit W Randall
Clara Hadley

but there was another STOKES marriage around that time

BRH St Michael 13.10.1907 -

Fred STOKES 21 B steel stamper 26 Chapel St, Brierley Hill William gentleman
Carmen Gertrude SMITH 19 S 84 Level St, Brierley Hill William brewer
banns wit John Stokes
Trixie Shaw

I thought both of these belonged to the family below in 1901(see brother John who was possibly the witness):

Charley Stokes 10
Clara Stokes 48
Fred Stokes 14
Harry Stokes 12
John Stokes 17
Samuel Stokes 21
William Stokes 49

BUT my Fred is missing in 1901 too........and he apparently ran a pub in B'ham in later years, so a father-in-law who was a brewer might have been useful.

Thanks again

Steph

Hi

Please don't archive - the marriage WAS for the family of William & Clara, not mine - so my Sam is still missing......

Thanks

Hi

Have found a 'possible' in Stourbridge, but as the 'other' Samuel is in that area, don't really want to pay to see the entry.

Looks like I'll have to wait for Ancestry to get 1911.

Thanks

Ok gonna archive this pending 1911 look up
It can easily be brought back to the boards
the BC archived section works like a filing cabinet and just needs a pm to bring the info back to one of the mods ...no worries.
