*Arc * -PR- Mary Jane Whale- Need help with a double baptism

Post by markwhale46 »

Could anyone take a look at two records for me?

My research is on a Mary Jane Whale born on the 4th June 1871 in Spitalfields, London.
I have found a record of baptism on the 25th June 1871 at St Stephens, Spitalfields, Tower Hamlet.
I have also found a baptism record for the 13th November 1872 at St Johns, Bethnal Green, Tower Hamlet.
The parents shown as John Provident Whale and Ellen Whale on one record and John Providence Whale and Ellen whale on the other. It appears at first that this could be two different Johns, Ellen's and Mary Jane's but both records show Mary Jane being born on the 4th June. If you look at the record for John Providence, it does say Provident and is recorded wrongly.
My question is, why are there two baptism records for the same girl? and why are they a year and five months apart? Am I missing something here?
Could someone take a look and come back with some explanation to this!
I really would appreciate a view on this please.
Thank You

I have come across cases of double baptisms for different reasons.

1) the child was born very sickly and there was a quick private baptism in case they died and then another public one later.

2) the child was baptised in the parish where they were born and again in the home parish of the parents -- presumably when they were taken back to see Grandparents.

Timing would be irrelevant because they did not always baptise children as babies -- sometimes they waited until they had two or three and baptised them all at the same time -- saved money -- three for the price of one.

I have a whole family being baptised twice in Tipton - once in a Church of England when they were babies - all at different times and then again when the whole family converted to the Methodist religion and they were all baptised together.

My great grandmother was baptised in the 1870's in Brierley Hill and then again as an adult after the birth of her first child in Tipton - both Church of England. She was very young when her parents died, so she probably didn't know that she had already been baptised.
There's no place like home ......

Thanks for your replies.
I am pretty sure that this person is who I am researching and are the same person. I guess it does not really matter that they were baptised twice but it was the first time I have came across this and thought it strange. Thanks for your views anyway. I guess it is one of those puzzle's that we will never know for sure as to why.
