*Archive TBC* - John Firth Taylor b 1904

Post by PaulG »

Hi all,

My first question. I am not asking for anybody to go off researching stuff for me but any pointers where to look would be very much appreciated...

My Great Grandad John Firth Taylor is the man in question. Nobody in the family has any information regarding him. He was a second husband for my Great Grandma and my Grandma's Father.

I have his birth record in the Birth Index but have been unable to find anything else whatsoever relating to him.

Name: John Firth Taylor
Year of Registration: 1904
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Barton Upon Irwell (1850-1934)
County: Lancashire
Volume: 8c
Page: 702

Obviously no census records exist for him and also no WW1 Service records as he was too young.

Can anyone give me some ideas on where to head on this....

Any help would be very much appreciated.

if you definatly know its him it would be worth sending for a full birth cert and that would get you into the census with his parents any sibling on john firth taylor weding cert ie witnesses

What about his marriage ?
that would have the name of his father on and his occupation
Also his age

that could be looked up at the archives if a church wedding.

Paul, you said he was a second husband for your Great Grandma?
What was her surname at that time?

Thanks for the quick replies people...

My G Grandma was Bessie Elena Harris b 1899 (Pendleton, Lancs)

Father - William Harris/Mother - Annie ?

1st Daughter by William Carter - Stephanie Carter

2nd Daughter by John Firth Taylor - Patricia Taylor (My Grandma)

So her last name at Marriage I would assume to be either Carter or Harris. I have done Marriage searches on for all 3 and found nothing...

I have also appled for the birth certificate for John Firth Taylor and had the money returned as the Birth Certificate is not available. They will be contacting me with reasons why. The records were all moved to Swinton, Manchester some time ago. I heard rumours of a flood at the Barton office but not sure if this is just someone telling porkies...

Many Thanks

Paul

There has been some confusion over this. My mother assured me it was Helena rather than Elena but I have records with it stated as Elena. I think I am coming round to my Mothers spelling of Helena now.... This fits in with my dates so I think it is the marriage. Cant see how i missed that for the first marriage.

Nother Lass,

Patricia wasn't born in 1932. She was born in 1937.

Only the top one makes any sense to me as this is my Grandmas half sister.

I am assuming all this information leads to a better starting point for finding my Great Grandad John Firth Taylor but he just seems so elusive. I am really hoping the next census gives me something on him.

you will find out that name sometime are spelt quite differently as a lot of people couldnt write and say the priest or registrar filled in the marriage cert he would write it down as they spoke it, and depending on accent depends what got wrote down

You need to look at the birth regis of the kids of this John that you know of and see what it says.
Were they definately married?
What does the birth certif of your Grandma say?
Is it in the name Taylor?
On the mothers info it should say Taylor formally Carter formally Harris ( or similar)
That is (although not always) an indication they were married.

It will have the name of the father on how is it spelt? Occupation etc

Was John married before?
Bessie was John may have been.

Or order via another regis office, ie the GRO that birth certif, maybe where you applied didnt cover that area be interesting to know why they havent got it.

that would be what I would do the children of this john their birth certif
then the birth for him and prob a marriage saying you only want that if the father is so and so if you get the birth one for John and it is correct

Just been looking at this how sure are you that the guy that Bessie married is a John Firth Taylor?

I wonder if she might have married a Samuel R Taylor in 1929? In Devon area.

I found a William Carter on the census b abt 1898 in Pendleton Lancs
I think he died in 1925 aged abt 27

There is a marriage for a couple Bessie Carter and Samuel R Taylor Bideford Devon in 1929.

I really think you need the birth certif for Patricia to see who is down as the father.
Where did you get the name John from?
What is on her Marriage cert? Not that that can be any reliable info always.

The only other thing is to go thru the complete indexes from maybe 1922-1938 or if this is the death of Wm Carter from 1925 - and see if there is a marriage for a Bessie carter and a John Firth Taylor.

hmmm not sure on that marriage now cos just found this

Births Sep 1930
Taylor Gerald Carter Exeter 5b 107

looks like the complete indexes!
