1879
Joseph Whale 27 married Ada Susanna Brown, 21. He was a ? clicker, and his father Henry Whale a steelworker.
So different person I think.

I think the only thing to do is get one of the birth certificates and see what Mary Ann's maiden name is.

Thanks for checking this out. I am more than 90% sure these are my relations.
Thank you Maths Girl for the 1911 census. No, I did not have this information and its a great help.
As far as the nine year old, I feel sure that he was Joseph's son from a previous marriage or relationship. There was a record of marriage banns for Joseph Whale around 1862, but I dismissed this as being the wrong guy due to him living with his mother in the 1871 census. But in ten years, its possible he married and divorced in that time.
As a new-be, I expected everything to be black and white and every one being married etc, but that's not real life.
I have to be honest, with having the Whale I thought this would be a breeze but there are way more whale's out there then I expected. Interesting though!
Very grateful to you all for checking this out.

I would say that 1878/9 is the year of marriage by the 1911 census (Married 33 years). Checked out Mary Ann's married in Wandsworth for that year and came up with a few. One possibility was Mary Ann A Allen (1d 833). But cannot link the two together.
Out of interest, can you get marriage details without purchasing a full marriage certificate?. I read somewhere that you can purchase the information without sending off for the certificate and it being cheaper?

Some marriages are on Ancestry now. Or if you know which church it took place in you can get a photocopy of the church record from the local archive. that is what NL does for many of the Black Country lookups. If you can't get to the archive then you can ask them to make a copy and for some places that works out cheaper than getting a copy of the certificate itself.

The 1862 marriage could be:
St James Church, Shoreditch
Joseph Whale, ag albourer, father Joseph Wale, shepherd
Hannah Turk, father Thomas Turk, farm labourer.

That does not seem to be him.
