Post by carolejcompton »

Looking for info on William Eggleton c1756. Tried KIngston upon Thames, Surrey 1786, convicted, transported on the First Fleet. On arrival he married Mary Dickenson also tried Kingston upon Thames. I have lots of Australian info...looking for info prior to transportation.
Also can someone tell me what site to look up those old convictions...

http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/ IF tried in London....otherwise you will have to track down the Quarterly Assize for the district they were convicted.

More than likey known as Ecclestone in the UK.

He is a 1st fleeter. Ther are several book that cover their court cases in detail. Several people on Ancestry have transcribed the trial.

Also have a look at "The Times" online.

As for his place of birth....if it is Surrey then two potential birth/baptisms are:

The Surrey History Centre has the Assize.

I don't they have been digitized so you would need somebody to physically look a them.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/nra/searches/subjectView.asp?ID=O40029

I have two first fleeters inmy tree and found the following sites usefull.

http://firstfleet.uow.edu.au/index.html

and

http://home.vicnet.net.au/~firstff/

The two books you might find references to William in are:

The Convict Ships 1787-1868 written by Charles Bateson in 1974.

The Founders of Australia: a biographical dictionary of the First Fleet written by Mollie Gillen in1989. I know that has biographical information on every first fleet convict.

so great, i'll try and locate the books, and the websites too.
When i traced my line back to 2 first fleeters, i was stoked. i also have traced a third fleeter too and other convicts... The crimes were mostly so petty and what penalties they paid.
Thanks again for the assist. cheers Carole
Just checked our local library has both books...will have to visit ASAP
