I'm currently trying to discover more on the surname Uffmore. I have ancestors in Chipping Campden and Wolstone (nr. Gotherington) GLS. The earliest recorded instance of the surname is the marriage of William Ufmore (spelled Vfmore in IGI) in Woolstone in 1575.
However I have a number of gaps to fill in the mid 17C (Commonwealth and Protectorate period).
This surname also occurs in and around Kidderminster WOR, but there appears no obvious link between the two localities.
Gloucestershire Archives have been singularly unhelpful in assisting my research, so I would appreciate any pointers!
Geoff

Hi Geoff
That sounds very interesting.
There is something about the Worcestershire Uffmore name here
http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=vaj4 ... re&f=false
Are you just concentrating on the the other one, or both?

Some of the names from Halesowen seem to have been place names turned family names and you can find them in the Court Rolls like here
http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=K1oJ ... CEEQ6AEwBQ
I looked at the name Walloxall from there and I'm sure it originated there and then family members moved on at various times. The problem is that with a very small number of people using the name it is hard to trace them when the records are incomplete. And then too the spelling variations do not help!
Here is a bit for the Woolston lot, but you probably have it.

Thnk you all for your contributions and comments.
I am aware of the name as a geographical name in North Worcs, having grown up about 4 miles from there and spent many happy hours cycling in the lanes around Clent and Belbroughton. Offmore Farm is a present day area of Kidderminster and there is the well-known SSSI at Uffmore Wood west of Halesowen. I'm fairly sure that the Offmore/Uffmore surname in this area is derived from the name of the locality.
I am primarily interested in the occurence of the name in Chipping Campden and Woolstone (assuming they are connected, which I cannot demonstrate conclusively at present). as it is an ancestral name. As has been pointed out, names 'travel' by various means. If there is a connection between the two groups of Uffmore surnames it is likely lost in the mists of time before the Tudor period - perhaps in a time of civil disturbance, such as the Wars of the Roses?
