ARC - Which John Hadley?
My Great Great Grandfather, Andrew Waterhouse
http://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/tribe/browse?userid=bcconnections&view=0&pid=34473&rand=467698517
Was tried at the Worcester Summer Assizes in 1845 for the manslaughter of a John Hadley.
He was engaged to his future wife, Ann Hadley, and was enjoying a few drinks at the Fountain public house in Oldbury.
John Hadley was rather "tipsy" and was very rude to Ann Hadley.
After Andrew and Ann let the pub, John Hadley and a friend followed them.
As Andrew and Ann approached Andrew's brother in laws house, where Andrew was living, John Hadley approached them and made more rude remarks.
When Andrew objected to this, John Hadley thumped him and Andrew, who was a lot smaller but a better "pugilist", tnumoed him a couple of times and John ran, only to collapse a bit further on.
A few days later, 15th May 1845, John Hadley died from swelling of the brain.
Half the witnesses said Andrew threw the first punch. Half said Andrew hit back in self defence.
The doctors could not say if the swelling of the brain was a result of the fight or John falling over drunk and hitting his head.
So the Judge threw the case out.
What I want to know is if this John Hadley is related to Ann Hadley in some way.
She had a brother John but he was only 13yo at the time of the fight.
A wife of John Hadley is a witness at the trial but her name is not mentioned.
This would be John Hadley's entry in the death index.

Re: Which John Hadley?
I have no idea who this John Hadley is. She had a brother John but you would think if that was the one giving her a hard time it would be mentioned in the reports.
I have put some more details onto BCC.

Re: Which John Hadley?
No mention of his occupation. His drinking buddy was Thomas Webb, a labourer from Oldbury.
John Hadley was a citizen of Oldbury.
I assume that if they used the Fountain they would notlive more than a coupleof block from there.

Re: Which John Hadley?
Mark could be the same family we were searching for on the Phoebe Hadley post, the Webbs and Hadley's all lived in that area south of Oldbury. I think Oldbury was a bit of a non de plume, like I tell people who don't know that I live in B'ham as they all know where that is
When in fact I live about 35 miles away. Linell.

A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

Re: Which John Hadley?
I am busily tracing my Hadley lines back and forth trying to find who this might be.
Hadley is a name I have hardley seen used until I started the family tree.
Like in the BCC tree...there are bazillions of them!
