RICHTER - Edith

Post by Sandra »

I was reading with interest the answer to "What would you Do" and have a similar problem.
My husbands Grandmother Berta RICHTER (nee Kindt) had three children Ruby Dorothea RICHTER b 1917 Pearl May RICHTER b 1915 born in Brisbane, Queensland. Berta KINDT married Theodor Bernhard RICHTER on 20th July 1909 in Berlin, they both came from Germany, Berta arriving on 17-10-1910 and Theodor 17-9-1907 (he was a sailor). On Ruby's birth certificate there is an Edith b 1910 which I cannot find.
Can you help?

Onher death certificate you mean. Where it lists her children, dead and alive?
She would have been on the boat in 1910. when the birth took place?

Check the marine BDM records.

Thank you Mark, I finally found her at the Queensland Archives. Her name was on the list as Edta age 6 with her mother Bertha Kindt age 26 (not Richter, even though she was married at the time) arrived in Aust 1910 on the ship 'Orontes' . The lists for the Mariners and Ships has not been transcribed for this year yet.

This is the web address, it may be useful for anyone else looking for immigrants to Queensland.

Actually I found her name on her sisters birth certificate, I don't have Bertha's death certificate yet.

The mystery deepens, why did Bertha travel under her maiden name? Edith/Edta was 6yrs old she must have been born in 1904 before Bertha was married. Theodor Bernard RICHTER (husband) came to Australia as a sailor on S.Scharnhorst arriving 27th September 1907 as per his naturalization certificate application, but he also stated that he was not married and had no children in 1913?

Now I have to find out what happened to Edta (Edith) and see if I can find why Theodor did not want to be married and why Bertha came out under her single name.

1904 Edith born in Germany
1907 Theodor Bernard RICHTER arrives in Australia
1909 Theodore marries Berta KINDT in Berlin
1910 Berta arrives in Australia
1915 Pearl born
1917 Ruby born

Now, as the marriage is after Theodor arrived in Australia, I suggest that he married Berta on a return trip to Germany, and she followed him out the next year. Therefore, he would not have been married at the time he first arrived in Australia.

Edith may not have been his his child as she was born 5 years before the marriage. Therefore, she could well have been travelling under her mother's maiden name and perhaps Berta had them both travelling this way to save embarassment and /or confusion.

OK Daniel, that seems right.
Is there any way of finding a birth record for Bertha and Edith in Germany, the same for a marriage? I cannot seem to find any sites on the web so far, for this information.
Edith came to Australia, I wonder what happened to her?
I would like to trace the parents of Bertha and Theodor if possible, any help would be appreciated.
