Marine - band boy

Post by bandit »

JOHN HENRY ROBERTS joined age 14 at Portsmouth in 1911, Attestation paper says birth place unknown, his accent led me to Manchester and I found 2 possibles, but need some way to connect to Marine Band Boy, school records maybe.

Any suggestions please.

Thanks for that Mark, trouble is from his enlistment onwards everything says " birthplace not known " even the 1911 census at Eastney Barracks shows that out of 30 boys at the School of Music he was the only one not able to say where he was born, this leads me to think he may have been an orphan, in the 1901 census there is a child the right age with a sister Alice ( which he was known to have ) living with a family in Manchester and listed as boarders, both these were said to be born in Manchester.
From there the search continues.
