Hi,
I'm trying to obtain the death certificate of a family member via the GRO site but they require the exact date of death which I don't know. I only have the year and a 3-month window which I found from the national death register (which records the date of birth not the exact date of death which I thought was odd!) I'm not even sure of the exact age of death as his birthday was within the 3-month window. Any advice appreciated.
How to obtain death cert. when exact date unknown?

Are you sure it's not just an optional field? I've ordered death certs before with the sole purpose of establishing a date of death, so it must be possible!

The only mandatory fields (indicated by a red asterisk) for a death certificate are: Surname of deceased, Forenames of deceased, Year [registered], Quarter [registered], District name, Volume Number, and Page Number. You need only to specify these.
The other fields are used for 'Reference Checking' which incurs additional cost.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies, now sorted. I was forgetting to click yes to "Is the General Register Office Index known?". The default is no which then makes the date of death mandatory.

Don't forget the age at death is only as given by the person registering the death and is often guesswork or wrong because the person has lied about their age in life
