Hi everyone.
My ggggrandfather John Frost b1790 was sentenced in Devon c1812 to death, commuted to life in the colonies. My family hx is quite easy to trace in Australia, but i cant find anything of Johns birth or family in England. I've hit a wall.

One of the annoying things about Convicts is that once they reach Australia you know everything about them including eye colour, height, scars and how often they scratched themselves.

But tracing their English/Irish/Scottish roots is a matter of luck.

I always start with the main newspapers, both local and the London ones.

When reporting on the case they often mention things like wife/kids or parents.

Let me see if I can find anything about Mr Frost for you....

How did you narrow down the Parish to Broad Clyst?

Looking at Frost's in Broad Clyst I think that this is a good candidate for his father.

John names his first born male John and that is a good clue as to the name of the Grandfather. John also names one of his children William.

This is probably another sibling and i think it indicates Mary's maiden name is Mare but I could not find a marriage.

Thank you for that.
I got Broad Clyst from his convict record. It actually stated that he came from Broad Clyst.
And the Name JOHN was passed on to at least another 4 generations after this. And the name William...John had a son William and each generation there appears to be a William too. Although i would assume that both these names would have been popular.

I live in Australia, how do you guys get onto this BDM info. Is there a website to access to get basic details.

I live in AUstralia as well.

My wife has seven convicts, including a couple of first fleeters, in her direct line so I am used to chasing them up.

The Latter Day Saint sites are a free resource that you can use.

Still looking, but i have hopefully been able to secure the book from the great link supplied in this forum by MarkCDodd. The book "The Last Farewell" by Jack Walton maybe available, although it is out of print. Mind you it is available in some of the larger libraries including the State Library of NSW. I am waiting to find out.
I know he was convicted in Devon, but i have found another tit bit of info, that perhaps he was from Lancashire. Now i'm all the way over here in Australia, how likely would he (solo, or with his family) to have travelled all the way to Devon, being mindful that he was born in 1790?

People did move about, what tit bit did you find?
There are quite a few John Frosts born around that time on the IGI in Devon.

I have a photo copy of John Frosts conviction...very wordy...essentially it said he broke into a house and stole money and goods.
I found a tree on another site that has him born in Lancashire. I have found alot of John Frosts in England in general. I have not found anything that could tell me where he was born or other family, parents, siblings etc.
As you said people did move about so maybe he did originally come from Lancashire.
