*TBC ArchiveCan someone please explain this. My brain hurts.

Post by Acorna »

Hi all

I was just looking for a relationship in my tree and I noticed this, and it's making my brain hurt trying to figure it out. Maybe one of you great people can.

My sons relationship to me is: Hines, Raymond Alan: Father, Half 6th cousin, Husband of the half 5th cousin twice removed
My sons relationship to his mother/my wife is: Vidler, Marie Louise: Mother, Half 5th cousin twice removed, Wife of the half 6th cousin

I cannot think where my wife's tree crosses/merges with mine. Can anyone give me a clue as to where I might find this ancient link?

Thanks in advance for any help

Ray

Your son's relationship to you is via one of his 6x Great Grandparents. Lets call these people 6xGrand.

Your son's relation to your wife is via one of his 4x Great Grandparents. Lets call these people 4xGrand.

4xGrand would have to be your wife's 6x Great Grandparents to get the 5x Cousins twice removed.

One of 4xGrand married one of 6xGrand and for one or both of them, it was a second marriage that produced children or one of them had children out of wedlock.

Only one of 4xGrand and one of 6xGrand is common to you and your wife, hence the half cousins.

Most genealogy programs wil let you produce a relationship chart.

If you produced one of these charts for each relationship you would see the common ancestor.

Mark

Thank you for that it was very helpful.

I have found the culprit, it's a lady called Sarah who has somehow become attached to 2 different gentlemen. But I'm sure she didn't marry both, so I'll have to check where she belongs.

Thanks again
